NATO Plans Gradual Reduction of Peacekeeping Forces in Kosovo

NATO has announced plans to reduce the number of troops deployed as part of its peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, citing improvements in the security environment across the region.

The Kosovo Force (KFOR), which currently consists of approximately 4,600 personnel, has maintained a presence in Kosovo since the conclusion of the 1998–1999 conflict between Serbian forces and ethnic Albanian separatists.

According to NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus Grynkewich, the current security conditions allow the alliance to further optimize the size and structure of the mission while continuing to monitor developments on the ground.

NATO stated that troop reductions are expected to begin later this year and will be implemented gradually. Alliance officials emphasized that the process will remain conditions-based and could be adjusted or reversed if the security situation deteriorates.

The planned drawdown comes as the United States continues to review its military footprint across Europe. Prior to the announcement, several European diplomats indicated that Washington had expressed interest in reducing its contribution to the KFOR mission.

The alliance did not specify which nations or units would be affected by the upcoming reductions. As of April, the United States maintained just under 600 troops within the peacekeeping force.

NATO reinforced KFOR with an additional 1,000 troops in 2023 following a period of heightened tensions and violence in northern Kosovo. Alliance officials noted that the reinforcement phase had already ended earlier this year after conditions stabilized.

Although tensions remain in parts of northern Kosovo, particularly in areas with large Serbian populations, security incidents have declined significantly. The most serious recent confrontation occurred in September 2023, when a Kosovo police officer was killed during an armed clash involving Serb militants.

NATO reaffirmed that KFOR will continue to play its role in maintaining a safe and secure environment while monitoring the evolving situation throughout Kosovo.
